Recreational Information

Golf – If you love golf, there are several golf courses in the area:

Duran Golf Club located at 7032 Stadium Pkwy., Viera, FL 32940 (321) 504-7776.  This is a par 72 championship course that is open to the public. 
Golf fees will range from $47 to $77 for Florida residents, depending on season.

Turtle Creek Golf Club located at 1279 Admiralty Blvd., Rockledge, FL (321) 632-2520.  This is a semi-private course.

Viera East Golf Course located at 2300 Club House Dr., Viera, FL (321) 639-6500.  This is a public course.

Cocoa Beach Country Club – (321) 868-3351.  This is a public course.

Baytree National Golf Links, 8207 National Drive, Melbourne, FL 32940 (321) 259-9060.  This is a private course.

Suntree Country Club, One Country Club Drive, Viera, FL  32955 (321) 242-6220.  This is a private course.

Fishing – If fishing is your pleasure, the area offers the best of both saltwater fishing and freshwater fishing.  A Florida resident may saltwater fish from land without a license; however, if saltwater fishing from a boat a fishing license is required, unless the fisherman is under 16, over 65 years of age, or if you have paid for a charter service.  For further information on saltwater fishing call Florida Marine Patrol 800-342-5367.  For freshwater fishing a license is always required.  For further information on freshwater fishing and licensing call Florida Game and Freshwater Fish Commission (321) 752-3115. A fabulous fishing spot:  Sebastian Inlet.

Boating – Boat registration information can be obtained from the South Brevard Service Complex located at 1515 Sarno Road, Melbourne (321) 255-4410.  The area is truly a boater’s delight, whether power or sail is your pleasure. 

Parks/Playgrounds – The Viera Regional Park on Judge Fran Jamieson Way is one of the Brevard County Parks and Recreation Department’s most ambitious projects.  When complete in early 2006, the park will host an impressive array of recreational options along with the Viera/Suntree Little League, the Space Coast United Soccer Club and the baseball, softball and soccer teams of the new Viera High School.  Those interested in more passive recreation will enjoy the six pavilions, five lakes, walking and jogging trails and open areas.

Tennis – Our tennis court offers residents an opportunity for some friendly competition.  The courts are great for both the novice and the advanced player.  Please remember to brush and line the courts after use.

Beaches/Swimming – The community pool offers residents year round swimming fun, with the heated pool and pavilion.  Surfing is also popular in the area and local surf shops supply information about clubs and surfing events.  Brevard County has some of the best beaches on the east coast as well as premier surfing spots.  Spend a day at the Cocoa Beach Pier and world-famous Ron Jon Surf Shop.  Daytona Beach is about one hour north; St. Augustine is about two hours north; Miami and South Beach are about three hours south.

Cycling – Bicycle helmets are required by law for all riders under the age of 16.  For the avid cyclist contact the Brevard Bicycling Coalition for information about bike clubs at (321) 777-1458.

Running – For the avid runner and racer the Space Coast Runners sponsor several races and recreational runs throughout the year.  In fact, Melbourne is home to the oldest Marathon in the state of Florida.

Brevard Zoo – Located at 8225 N. Wickham Rd., Melbourne, FL (321) 254-9453.  A favorite among children is the zoo’s “Paws On”, a petting zoo where guests can touch the animals, and the interactive learning center, and of course the zoo train.  The zoo is home to more than 400 animals.  It is a great way to spend the day.  Annual passes are available.

Kennedy Space Center – Located in Cape Canaveral offers tours of the shuttle, launch pads and the original “mission control” area as well as films on the space program from inception to the present.  Bus tours are offered from the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.  For launch information call 867-4636

Theme Parks – For those wanting theme parks you are about a 90 minute drive from Walt Disney World which is home to the Magic Kingdom, Epcot Center, Disney – MGM Studios, Pleasure Island, Typhoon Lagoon, Animal Kingdom, and Blizzard Beach.  Other theme parks include Sea World, Universal Studios, and Wet-n-Wild.

Arts & Culture

The surrounding area offers a lively collection of talented artists, musicians, and actors.  The Brevard Cultural Alliance is the county’s arts and cultural affairs agency which can be contacted at (321) 690-6817 or 321 690-6819.  Below is a small listing of a few of the local theaters, museums, and cinemas.  Art galleries are located throughout the county in the historic downtown sections of Melbourne, Eau Gallie, Cocoa Beach, and Cocoa.  Throughout the year you can find an Art Festival or Craft Show.

Theater –

The Maxwell C. King Center for the Performing Arts is a 2,000 seat performing arts center offering Broadway touring productions, comedy, country, classical, opera, dance, popular and family entertainment as well as Children’s Educational Theater Programs.  The King Center is located on the campus of Brevard Community College at 3865 N. Wickham Road, Melbourne – box office (321) 242-2219.

Cocoa Village Playhouse, 300 Brevard Ave., Cocoa, FL.  This 15-year-old performing arts organization produces at least four lavish musicals annually.  You can reach them at (321) 636-5050.

The Henegar Center is the home of the Melbourne Civic Theater.  The Henegar Center is located in a renovated school, the oldest public building in the county.  The center is under the direction of the Brevard Regional Arts Group.  It is located at 625 E. New Haven Ave., Melbourne, FL – (321) 723-8698.

Riverside Theater is located to the south in Indian River County at 3250 Riverside Park Drive, Vero Beach – (561) 231-6990.  The theater offers wide variety of programming.

The Arts –

Brevard Museum of Art & Science located at 1463 N. Highland Ave., Melbourne, FL (321) 242-0737 exhibits works by regional and national artists.  The museum has an extensive permanent collection.

The Children’s Science Center is located at 1520 Highland Ave. across the street from the Brevard Museum of Art & Science – call (321) 254-7782.  The museum offers “hands on” exhibits for children and art programs for children.

The Center for the Arts Museum is located to the south in Indian River County at 3001 Riverside Park Drive, Vero Beach, FL (561) 231-0707.  The museum is next to the Riverside Theater and offers many impressive exhibits.

Cinemas – Several multiplex movie theaters are within easy reach. 
There is a new theater at The Avenue Viera Mall called The Rave Viera 16 (321) 775-1210; to the south is Cinema World of Florida, Inc. located at 4345 W. New Haven Ave., Melbourne, FL (321) 723-5211. 
Also, there are multiple theatres at The Avenue Viera located at Town Center Avenue.  Regal’s Oaks 10 is located just behind the Melbourne Square Mall at 1800 W. Hibiscus St., Melbourne, FL (321) 676-0880. 

 

Shopping

The Avenue Viera located at Town Center Avenue, Melbourne, FL is the newest mall to the area with major department stores, variety shops, and theaters.  In contrast to a mall, this “Main Street” pedestrian center is smaller in scale and appeals to the discriminating, and often time-constrained shopper looking for high-quality merchandise.

Melbourne Square Mall located to the south on Hwy. 192, with major department stores and variety shops.

Indian River Mall and the Vero Beach Prime Outlet Shops – If you feel the need for a greater shopping expedition, the newest shops are about a 45 minute drive south.  The mall is located at Hwy. 60 & 60th Ave., Vero Beach and the Prime Outlet shops are on Hwy. 60 just west of the I-95 exit.

For a more quaint shopping experience, there is Downtown Melbourne Village with its array of antique shops, a Christmas shop, Irish Shoppe, and several gallery shops.  Twice a year in April and October there are arts and crafts shows in Downtown Melbourne Village that attract hundreds of talented artisans to the area.  Typically on the second Friday of the month, the village celebrates with an evening street party – Friday Fest – feature fun for the whole family – with live music and a kids play area.
